ITINERARY

Whats Unique:

This tour not only takes you to some of the most important archaeological sites but it is also designed to bring you closer to the natural beauties of the Greek country side, where history meets tradition.

Description&Program:

Leaving Athens behind we drive on the coastal road towards the west. Our first stop (after approx. one hour), is the Corinth Canal. There we’ll make a short stop, enough to see the Canal, (approx. 6 km long connecting the Aegean with the Ionian Sea) take photos and visit the local cafeteria. Twenty minutes later we’ll arrive at tingthe small town of Ancient Corinth. This is a major stop of our tour, and we’ll visit the archaeological site and the museum and afterwards the town, for coffee or shopping. (Optional visit to Acrocorinth).

Now we leave the high way and we drive south, through the hills of Corinth. You can enjoy the scenery as we drive through the Greek countryside full of vineyards and olive trees, as far as the eye can see.

The winding road through the hills will take us to Nemea in approximately forty five minutes. There we will visit the archaeological site and the museum.

Nemea, one of the biggest vineyards in Greece has been well known even from ancient times for two things: The Nemean Lion and the Nemean Games. The first of the twelve labors for the semi god hero Heracles (Hercules) set by the King of Mycenae (Mykines) Eurystheus was to rid the Nemean plain of the wild, enormous and extremely ferocious beast known as the Nemean Lion. This huge creature was the son of the monsters Typhon (who had 100 heads) and Echidna (half maiden - half serpent), and brother of the Theban Sphinx. Heracles was forced to stun the beast with his club before proceeding to strangle it. He then used the lions own claws to cut off its pelt. From this time on the skin of the Nemean Lion became one of the symbols of Heracles and so did the olive-wood club.

The Nemean Games, (one of the four Games of the ancient times) similar to the ancient Olympics took place here. Indeed, from 1996 there has been a revival of the Games that take place every four years. Members of its honorary committee are of all over the world such as writer Umberto Eco, Princeton Professor Edmund Keeley, Golden Olympic medalist Sergey Bubka etc.

A very good local winery is not too far from the site. During a very interesting visit you can taste a variety of local Greek wines and learn more about them. The order in which we visit the site and the winery can be changed according to your wishes. We can schedule lunch any time between Corinth and Nemea.

After the conclusion of our tour we return to Athens.

All our private tours are flexible. It is always up to you to change the itinerary according to your wishes.

Admission fees and lunch are not included in the price of the tour.

ITINERARY

Whats Unique:

This tour gives us the opportunity to visit and explore the places where St. Paul preached to the ancient Greeks in Athens and Corinth, in a day.

Description&Program:

The tour starts by visiting the “Areos Pagos” at the foot of the Acropolis. The “Areos Pagos”(literally,Mars-Hill) had served as the tribunal location in Athens already for a millennia by the time of Paul. (Today the high court of Greece is still called the “Areos Pagos”). At the time of Paul, it had ceased to have the same jurisdictional power it had in classical Greece (5-4th century), however, it still had the status of a place of trial. At the “Areos Pagos”, Paul was invited to present the Christian doctrines to the Athenians. (Optional visit to the Acropolis).

Continuing our tour to our next stop, the “Agora”, we’ll have the opportunity of a sightseeing in the centre of Athens. (Temple of Zeus-1896 Olympic stadium-Presidential Palace-Greek Parliament-Changing of the Guards).

The “Agora” (which means market) in ancient Athens functioned as more than a place where goods were bought and sold. It served as a testing ground for new ideas a place where people could come and meet. This is most likely where Paul began his debate with the philosophers that is recorded in the Bible (in the book of Acts).

With our visit to the “Agora” we conclude the Athens part of our tour and we continue to visit Corinth. About an hour away via the coastal highway we reach the Corinth Canal (approx. 6 km long connecting the Aegean with the Ionian Sea)where we have a brief stop for photos. Then we drive to Ancient Corinth where we visit the museum and the archaeological site where the “Bema” is.

The “Bema” was where the judge of the town presided or the orator of the town would speak or make a public announcement. The “Bema” in Corinth is located in the heart of the city as public speaking was very important. The Bible, in the Book of Acts, records that Paul was brought to the Bema under accusations of contrary teaching. The Roman governor Gallio dismissed the case as a Jewish quarrel.

We conclude our tour in Corinth with lunch in a traditional Greek taverna and we start our return trip to Athens via Kechries, the port of Corinth from where St. Paul sailed to Ephessus.

All our private tours are flexible. It is always up to you to change the itinerary according to your wishes.

Admission fees and lunch are not included in the price of the tour.

Corinth is famous not only as a place of great archaeological interest but as an important landmark in the history of Christianity. St. Paul lived and preached in Corinth, a rich and powerful city, in his pilgrimage to spread the teachings of Christ.

This is the major stop of our tour, where we’ll visit the archaeological site, with the unique monolithic Temple of Apollo (one of the oldest in Greece, 585 B.C.) the Bema where St. Paul preached and the Archaeological Museum of Corinth. Afterwards we can have a relaxing stroll in the pedestrian part of the town, stop to enjoy a cup of coffee or do some shopping.

Finally, before heading back to Athens we’ll visit Acrocorinth, where in the Temple of Aphrodite, (Goddess of Love) the famous sacred “eteres”served their Goddess. (For more information about this you will have to ask me in person!). An imposing fortress was later built in the site. The fortress was successively taken over by the Byzantines, the Franks, the Venetians and finally the Turks. Extensive ruins remain from this fortress.

ITINERARY

Whats Unique:

According to legend Cape Sounion is the spot where Aegeas, King of Athens, believing that his only son Prince Theseas was dead leapt to his death off the cliff, this giving his name to the Aegean Sea.

Description&Program:

The wind-swept Cape Sounio was an obvious choice for a sanctuary of Poseidon, where the sailors might offer a last sacrifice to appease the mighty God of the Sea before leaving the comparative safety of the Saronic Gulf for the perils of the open Aegean Sea. The archaic temple was destroyed by the Persians in 480 B.C. and a new one was built in its place in 440 B.C. by Pericles. The contrast between the 12 white remaining Doric columns and the deep blue of the sea is still as dazzling as in the days of Lord Byron who carved his name on the marble.

Byron spent several months in Athens in 1810 and 1811 and there are two documented visits by him to Sounion. Byron mentions the Cape in his poem Don Juan.

Place me on Suniums marbled steep,
Where nothing, save the waves and I,
May hear our mutual murmurs sweep...

The site is the most popular half day excursion from Athens, not only for its great archaeological interest but for the scenic drive along the coastal road of the Saronic Gulf as well. Passing on the way though some of Athens’s most expensive and beautiful suburbs and resorts (Glyfada, Vouliagmeni, Lagonisi) areas that offer you a variety of choices either for a coffee brake or for lunch on the waterfront.

ITINERARY

Whats Unique:

This is a day tour to the most interesting and beautiful sites around Athens. (Marathon, Vravrona, Cape Sounio).

Description&Program:

We start the tour heading north of Athens passing some of Athens’s most beautiful and expensive suburbs (Kifisia, Ekali, Drosia). We will make a short stop at the dam of Marathon’s Lake, the main water source for the city of Athens. Then we’ll approach the plain of Marathon where the historical battle between the Athenians and the Persians took place in 490 B.C. Here we’ll visit first the starting point of the Olympic Marathon race, an event which started with the first modern Olympics in Athens in 1896. The race was inspired by the fabled run of an Athenian soldier named Pheidippides who took the message of the great victory from the Battlefield of Marathon to Athens.

Then we’ll visit the “Tymvos”, the tomb which was raised in the burial ground in honour of the Athenian soldiers who fell in the battle against the Persians.

As an ultimate honor and recognition of their bravery the dead of the Marathon Battle were the only ones ever to be buried where they died instead of in the main cemetery of Athens in Kerameikos. On the tomb of the Athenians this epigram composed by the ancient poet Simonides wrote: The Athenians, as defenders of the Hellenes, in Marathon destroyed the might of the golden-dressed Medes.

We’ll complete our tour in the plain of Marathon with a visit to the Museum of Marathon. After our visit we will drive South through several towns and summer resorts and we’ll stop again at the temple of Artemis in Vravrona, sometimes called "The Parthenon of the Bear Maidens"

Skipped by most visitors - and most tour operators - solely because it is a bit out of the way this temple is rarely crowded and stands by a delightful Museum filled with images of the children who once studied at the temple of Artemis called "little bears" or arktoi

All our private tours are flexible. It is always up to you to change the itinerary according to your wishes.

ITINERARY

Whats Unique:

This tour is highly suggested for all of you who have only one day to visit and explore Athens.

Description&Program:

Athens, the capital of Greece after its independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1834 is one of the most visited places in Greece. It is called “violet-crowned” because just before sunset Mount Hymettus glows with a particularly soft purple-shaded light which is reflected on the vast sprawling city below.

Athens is a city of great cultural interest as well as a bustling, modern city. The harmonious and perfectly balanced combination between the old and the new make Athens unique. According to the legend the Phoenician Kekrops founded the city on the rock of the Acropolis.

Athens’s patronage was disputed by two mighty Olympian Gods, Poseidon and Athena. The council of the gods decided to settle the dispute with a duel: Poseidon against his niece Athena. The winner would be the one to offer to the city the most useful gift. The mighty Sea God struck the rock with his trident and a fountain of semi salted water sprang from the earth. Cleverly the Goddess of Wisdom produced an olive tree, symbol of peace and prosperity. It was an easy win for goddess Athena and her name was given to the city.

Athens is a city full of remarkable monuments and great historical places such as the Acropolis, Parthenon, Agora, Temple of Zeus, the first Olympic stadium and many more.

This tour will give you the opportunity to observe the striking contrasts of ancient and modern that make Athens such a fascinating city.

Suggested itinerary

We start the tour by visiting the so called “sacred rock”, the Acropolis. Here you will see the Parthenon that was dedicated to goddess Athena (Parthenos), Propylea, the monumental entrance to the sacred area, the temple of Athena Nike which was dedicated to Athena-Nike (Victory) the Erechtheion with its famous female figures-statues the Caryatides or Maidens dedicated to both goddess Athena and god Poseidon. The Odeum of Herodus Atticus and the ruins of the first theatre in the whole world the Theatre of Dionysus and finally the Areopagus (Mars Hill).

We will proceed to the Temple of Olympian Zeus (visit) and then to Panathenaic or Kallimarmaro Stadium which hosted the first modern Olympic Games in 1896 (short visit). We will drive by the Prime Minister’s Residence (Maximou Mansion), the former Royal Palace, today the Presidential Mansion and the House of Parliament with the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier (short stop so as to watch the changing of the guards). We continue our tour by driving up to the highest point of Athens, the Lycabettus Hill (the best 360 degree panoramic view of Athens). From Lycabettus Hill we’ll proceed to the oldest and most picturesque neighbourhood of Athens, Plaka (stone-paved narrow streets, traditional Greek tavernas -best gyros- antique and souvenir stores) and the Tower of the Winds.

After lunch in Plaka we’ll drive through the city centre to the area of the Flea Market (street bazaar, antique stores) where we’ll visit the Ancient Agora (the political, financial and commercial centre of ancient Athens). There we’ll see the temple of Hephaistos, known also as Theseum (best preserved ancient temple in Greece) and the Stoa of Attalos (an ancient shopping centre) which was restored in the fifties by the American Archaeological School. It is a peaceful and inspiring site and especially in Spring when everything is in full bloom one’s spirit lifts!

Our tour will be completed with our visit to the National Archaeological Museum, the biggest museum in Greece with one of the most extensive and important archaeological collections in the world. It houses, among other important exhibits, the frescoes of the island of Santorini and the prehistoric golden collection of Mycenae with the famous mask of Agamemnon.

OR with a visit to the New Acropolis Museum, "Home" of the Parthenon Marbles and important and impressive archaeological findings from the sacred rock of the Acropolis. (Mondays closed)

ITINERARY

Whats Unique:

Next to the Acropolis in Athens Delphi is by far the most popular archaeological site in Greece.

Located 180 km. Northwest from Athens on the South slope of the mountain Parnassos, Delphi was believed to be the centre of the earth and was the most important religious centre of ancient Greece. Indeed it was and still is one of the most beautiful and mystical sites in the world.

The ancient Greeks chose this unique spot for their most sacred and famous Oracle, dedicated to Apollo, which influenced the fate of states and individuals for about 1000 years.

Description&Program:

We depart from Athens in the morning via the national highway and pass by the towns of Thebes, Levadia and Arachova. Arriving in Delphi we’ll visit Castalia Spring and the main archaeological site (the Temple of Apollo, the Treasury of the Athenians, the Theatre, the Stadium, etc.) and the Museum with the famous statue of Antinoos and the unique bronze statue of the Charioteer dated from 475 B.C.

Our lunch in a traditional Greek restaurant in the picturesque town of Delphi, after our visit to the sites, will be the perfect way to recharge our batteries and enjoy the local cuisine.

After lunch, heading back towards the archaeological site, we’ll have a stop to see the ruins of the Temple of Athena Pronea and the Tholos.

Driving down the mountain Parnassos and before reaching the national highway to Athens, we’ll stop again at Cheronia to see the famous “Lion of Cheronia”. The “Lion” is a marble monument erected in the battlefield by Phillip, King of Macedonia and father of Alexander the Great, to commemorate his victory there against the Athenian and Thebean armies in 338 B.C.

EXTENDED DELPHI TOUR

Driving up the mountain Parnassos in the morning and before we reach Delphi we’ll visit the famous monastery of “Ossios Loukas”.

Ossios Loukas is the largest surviving monastery of the Middle Byzantine period in Greece. It was founded in the early 10th century by the hermit St. Loukas whose relics are kept in the monastery to this day.

The Katholikon has some of the best preserved Byzantine mosaics.

The spectacular mountain view from the monastery’s courtyard and the welcoming shade of the old pine trees make this an ideal place to enjoy a cup of Greek coffee.

(For more information about this you will have to ask me in person!). An imposing fortress was later built in the site. ITINERARY

Whats Unique:

A great suggestion if you have an extra day in Athens! The full day tour of Argolis is a trip to some of the most important archaeological sites of Greece, in the most characteristic Greek-Mediterranean scenery of Peloponnese.

Description&Program:

Leaving Athens behind we drive on the coastal road towards the West. Our first stop (after approximately one hour) is the Corinth Canal. There we’ll make a short stop, enough to see the Canal, (approx. 6 km long connecting the Aegean with the Ionian Sea), take photos and visit the local cafeteria. Twenty minutes later we’ll arrive at the small town of Ancient Corinth where we’ll visit the archaeological site with the unique monolithic Temple of Apollo (one of the oldest in Greece, 585 B.C.), the Bema from where St. Paul preached and the museum.

Driving afterwards trough the hills of Corinth, among thousands of olive trees and vineyards, we’ll arrive at prefecture of Argolis where we’ll visit the archaeological site of Mycenae.

Mycenae, Rich in Gold, was the kingdom of mythical Agamemnon, who dominated the Aegean Sea after the distraction of the Minoan Empire. The city looks out across the plain of Argos to the sea. It’s elevated position and it’s huge Cyclopean Walls, offered protection from surprise attacks by pirates and enemies. At the peak of its power (1300 B.C.) the population leaved around the fortress where the Royal Family had its Palace. The Palace, symbol of power of the Mycenaean rulers, was reached by a large ramp beginning at the Lions Gate.

Outside the fortress lie the impressive beehive tombs including that ascribed to Agamemnon known also as the Treasury of Atreas.

After concluding our visit to Mycenae we’ll drive through the plain of Argos among endless farms of orange trees and forty minutes later we’ll arrive to the picturesque town of Nafplion (First capital of modern Greece, from 1829 to 1834).

Nafplion is the most ancient city in Greece. According to the myth it was founded by Theseas who first conceived the idea of organized cities where people could live together. The city lies under the imposing rocks of Palamide the most formidable Venetian Castle in the Eastern Mediterranean. The smaller Castle of Acronafplia (where the ancient city was founded) crowns Naflion and at the entrance of the harbor, in the Argolic Gulf, there is yet another, third Castle Bourtzi, situated on a small islet.

Whether you decide to have lunch in the old medieval quarter, with the narrow, stoned paved streets, or by the port, with the view of Bourtzi, Nafplion is the best choice for lunch in this trip.

After concluding our visit to Nafplion we’ll start the return trip to Athens.

Duration: approx. 8 hours

B.EXTENDED ARGOLİS TOUR

From Nafplion, driving through the winding roads of Argolis, we are going to visit Epidaurus, famous for it’s ancient theatre and the sanctuary of Asclepios.

The sanctuary of Asclepios was a healing centre as well as a cultural centre in ancient times. Epidaurus was built around the 4th Century B.C. and has a multitude of buildings most famous of which is the ancient Theatre of Epidaurus.

The Theatre of Epidaurus has reached our days almost intact. The view, aesthetics and acoustics of the theatre are breathtaking. It’s still in use today and hosts carefully selected theatrical plays, concerts, and festivals during the summer. For an actor to perform in the Theatre of Epidaurus is considered the greatest honour and the ultimate acknowledgement of his or her talent, if he wins over the tough audience.

ITINERARY

Whats Unique:

A great suggestion for a long day trip to some of the most interesting places in Peloponnese! This long day tour will take you to Ancient Corinth (famous not only as a place of great archaeological interest but as an important landmark in the history of Christianity as well as St.Paul lived and preached in Ancient Corinth) and to Olympia the birth place of the Olympic Games.

Description&Program:

Leaving Athens behind we drive on the coastal road towards the West. Our first stop (after approximately one hour) is the Corinth Canal. There we’ll make a short stop, enough to see the Canal, (approximately 6 km long connecting the Aegean with the Ionian Sea), take photos and visit the local cafeteria. Twenty minutes later we’ll arrive at the small town of Ancient Corinth where we’ll visit the archaeological site with the unique monolithic Temple of Apollo (one of the oldest in Greece, 585 B.C.), the Bema from where St. Paul preached and the Museum.

Driving afterwards through the hills of Corinth and the mountains of Arcadia, among thousands of olive trees, we’ll arrive at prefecture of Elis where we’ll visit the archaeological site of Olympia.

You are going to visit the archaeological site with the Temple of Zeus (where the gold and ivory statue of the god was placed -one of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world - work of Fedias) the Temple of Hera (where the lighting of the Olympic Flame takes place every four years) the original ancient Olympic Stadium and many more monuments. After the archaeological site we will visit the Museum.

The Archaeological Museum of Olympia is one of the most important museums in Greece. The museums permanent exhibition contains finds from the sacred precinct of the Altis and the rest archaeological site dating from the prehistoric era. Among the many exquisite exhibits you we will see the famous marblestatues of Hermes of Praxiteles and the Nike (Victory) of Paionios.

After the conclusion of our tour in Olympia we can have lunch in the town and start our return trip back to Athens
